Q2 On Special Assignment Preview: Women Behind Bars

Posted: Updated:

While a majority of male prisoners are incarcerated for violent crimes, only 30 percent of female inmates are locked up for violent crimes.

Most of the women behind bars are serving time for drug offenses, which stem from long term emotional and mental disorders.

When the women are incarcerated, they often leave behind children who then repeat the cycle.

The cost of housing inmates is about $115 per inmate per day.

The women often return to prison, as we learned from three inmates who are on their fifth stint.
