Montana Sam's Club stores spared amid wave of closures for company

No Montana Sam's Club locations are among the list of closure the company announced Thursday.

The company told Business Insider that 63 locations are closing after reports of sudden store closings emerged on social media. In some places, employees reported arriving at stores to discover them closed and their jobs eliminated without warning.

Billings has a Sam's Club at 4420 King Ave. E.

In a post on Twitter, Sam's Club says they want to better align their locations with their current strategies:

Ten of the affected stores will be turned into e-commerce distribution centers, and employees of those stores will have the opportunity to reapply for positions at those locations, a Walmart official said.

The remaining stores will stay open for several weeks before closing permanently, according to Business Insider.

The announcement came on the same day that Walmart, which owns Sam's Club, said they have plans to raise their minimum wage to $11 per hour, expand employee benefits, and offer bonuses of up to $1,000.

Walmart officials had credited their decision to raise wages to money saved from the Republicans' tax-overhaul plan passed in December. In that announcement, however, the company made no mention of the Sam's Club closures and has not indicated how many jobs will be lost.
