Cold temps bring more seeking shelter at Montana Rescue Mission in downtown Billings

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - With temperatures below freezing in the Billings area, the Montana Rescue Mission is busy.

The mission enters "Code Blue" once temperatures fall below 32 degrees. This means crews drive around and pick up people on the streets, while the mission lowers its sobriety expectations for people coming to stay at its shelter at 2822 Minnesota Ave.

MRM officials say they house between 70 and 75 people on typical nights. But during Code Blue, about 20 to 30 more people seek shelter, mission officials said.

During the area's first major storm around the New Year, about 40 more people stayed a night, according to the mission.
