Former Helena teacher charged with raping student

Posted: Updated:

HELENA - Rene Elena Carter, a former Helena teacher, has been charged with raping a student several years ago.

Carter appeared in Lewis & Clark County Justice Court on Thursday.

Justice of the Peace Michael Swingley read Carter her rights and told her she's facing one count of felony sexual intercourse without consent.

Charging documents allege that between February 2015 and June 2015, Carter had repeated sexual intercourse with a minor male who was legally incapable of giving consent.

Carter worked as a special education teacher with Helena schools starting in 1998. She resigned her post in July of 2015.

She was released on her own recognizance and is scheduled to be arraigned in District Court on Feb. 21.
