North Dakota double murder defendant found not guilty

Posted: Updated:

WILLISTON, N.D. - A jury has found a man accused of killing two people not guilty.

Lamar Putney was accused of killing Diandre Lott and Donzell Washington in May 2016.

Putney said he shot the men in self-defense after they tried to rob him in his Williston apartment.

Prosecutors argued Putney had changed details of his story and that Lott and Washington were unarmed when they entered the apartment.

The jury deliberated for about three hours before returning the not guilty verdict.

Putney was expressionless as the verdict was read, but celebrated with his family after being released.

"It's mainly my wife's prayers, my family's prayers, my son's prayers that got me through," said Putney shortly after being released and being reunited with his family. "My lawyers, they always believed in me and they told me to keep my spirits high. So it got me closer to God. When you've got everything stripped away from you, even your commissary and your phone calls, it's just you and God in the room," said Putney, referring to his incarceration leading up to the trial.

Williams County State Attorney declined to comment.
