Billings man booked on 8th DUI charge

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS -- A crash in a residential Billings neighborhood has resulted in an eighth drunken-driving charge for a Billings man.

Thomas Darold Hamell, 55, made his initial appearance Monday in Yellowstone County Justice Court on one count of felony driving under the influence.

Hamell was previously convicted of the same crime in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2013.

Three of his former convictions were in 1999, according to court documents.

On Sunday night, Billings police were dispatched to Avenue C for a report of a drunken driver.

The caller reported that a vehicle was stuck in the ditch and the driver, later identified as Hamell, was intoxicated.

The officer smelled alcohol on Hamell ‘s breath and noted that he could not maintain his balance.

Hamell refused a Breathalyzer test so he was transported to the jail.

The officer reported that Hamell became belligerent on the way to the jail and made threats.

Officers obtained a search warrant and drew blood from Hamell.

The results of the blood test have not yet come back.

Hamell is being held at the Yellowstone County jail on $25,000 bond.
