Q2 Weather: Here we go again with snow and cold

Posted: Updated:

The good news is the gusty winds will ease up. The bad news is the wind leaves just before more snow and rain and cold temperatures show up.

For the morning, our focus will be on gusty winds especially into the bear tooth mountain foothills. Gusts have been recorded at over 70 mph around Livingston overnight.

Areas from Roundup, Billings, to the west will remain breezy to downright windy through the morning.

A cold front will sweep across the area this afternoon, bringing a chance of rain and snow during the afternoon and evening hours. An isolated area of freezing rain is a possibility.

After hitting highs in the 30s to low 40s Wednesday, temperatures will quickly drop overnight. Rain showers will switch to snow.

Overall snow totals looked to be in about the 1 to 3 inch range for most of the area through early Thursday. Higher amounts are possible in the Red Lodge foothills, where snow could linger a bit longer.

For Thursday, temperatures will likely be warmest in the morning, and then slip into the single digits above and below zero by Thursday evening.

Billings forecast:

Valentines Day: Increasing clouds with a west wind 15 to 25 mph early. A high near 40. West wind 15 to 25 mph. Then, a 60% chance of rain switching to snow later.

Wednesday night: 60% chance of rain and snow during the evening, becoming all snow after 8pm. Cloudy, with a low around 12. Northwest wind 5 to 15 mph. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Thursday: Snow likely, mainly in the morning. Gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 12, but that will happen early in the day. Wind chill values as low as zero. North wind 5 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
