Video extra: Dog rescued after falling through ice on Lake Helena

Posted: Updated:

HELENA - A dog was rescued after it fell through the ice on Lake Helena around 11:30 a.m. Friday.

The dog appears to be a large black lab. He fell through the ice several dozen yards from the shore.

Animal Control and Fish, Wildlife and Parks were among the first responders to reach the scene. Access to the area was difficult.

Lewis and Clark County Search and Rescue was called in to assist with the rescue. MTN has been told the ice was too thin to attempt the rescue with a sled without a drysuit.

Once crews were suited up and out on the ice, they were able to pull the dog to safety just before 1 p.m.

Officials say the dog rescued is showing signs of hypothermia and has been taken to a vet to be checked out.

According to Animal Control, a second dog was captured in the area. They are currently searching for the animal’s owner.

Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue says ice is extremely dangerous right now and people are urged to stay off it.
